My rating: <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2364862446">5 of 5 stars</a>

<br />
I was given an advanced copy of Bring Me Back from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.<br />

WOW! A great psychological thriller/mystery. Where did Layla go? There has been no sign of her and no body has been found. Twelve years later, Finn is getting ready to marry Layla's sister, Ellen. But wait, there are now signs that Layla may be alive. The book will keep you guessing right til the end.<br />
<br />
Even though I had pretty much figured out what was happening, the twists and turns of the plot kept me on my toes. If you like a good psychological mystery without any gore, you should try Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris.<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading.<br />

<br />
I received an advanced copy of The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.<br />
<br />
This was such a gut-wrenching book. It's hard to explain how a book about an innocent man's time on death row was life affirming and hopeful, but Anthony Ray Hinton's story is just that. I will be mentally and emotionally processing this book for the rest of my life. In a world where so many horrible things are happening, where there is so much hate, this book gave me a lot to think about.<br />

<br />
I was given an advanced copy of When Life Gives You Lululemons by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.<br />
<br />
I read The Devil Wears Prada years ago when I was working in advertising. For someone who has worked in that kind of environment, the actions of Miranda Priestly were comical and way too close to home. Her 1st Assistant Emily was a character that I was very much familiar with. The take no prisoners, slightly sweet, mostly bitchy woman whom you never want to cross.<br />
<br />
In When Life Gives You Lululemons, we find Emily relocated to LA and working as an image consultant to the rich and famous. You know, the ones who go around picking up after Britney Spears, Justin Beiber, Mel Gibson and try to fix whatever malarkey they have gotten into. When a younger, hipper image consultant starts stealing her best (aka worst offenders) clients, Emily doesn’t know what to do.<br />
<br />
Enter Karolina Hartwell, the mega-supermodel wife of a Senator with presidential aspirations. When Karolina is falsely accused of drinking and driving with children in her car, the happy life she thought she had begins to unravel. While visiting her friend Miriam, Emily meets Karolina and decides to help her. While trying to get to the bottom of things, they find that the Senator is the one to set her up so that he can divorce her to advance his career. <br />
<br />
Between unraveling the clues and trying to figure out how to deal with suburban Connecticut residents and their weird ways, Emily gets her “image consultant” mojo back.<br />
<br />
I enjoyed the book but I believe I will never move to suburban Connecticut. Those people are crazy!<br />

<li>Steak n Shake 17509 N Palms Village Pl, Tampa FL - We stopped a Steak n Shake around 4pm on Friday 9/8/17 to get some food on our way to TN. The employee at the drive thru were so sweet, asking us how we were doing and even gave our dog, Buddy, a special treat - BACON!</li>
<li>Improvised (and illegal) gas canisters strapped to cars, like this.</li>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>It is a small world. </li>
<ul>
<li>While waiting at the Tifton, GA Walmart to have our flat tire fixed, we met Diana, Diane, and John. They live near us and they had a blow out on I-75 going 70 mpg. They live right on the water and were concerned that they wouldn't have a house to come back to. </li>
<li>While buying a sweatshirt at the Walmart, we ran into a woman and her two sons, who live in Cape Coral. </li>
</ul>
<li>The tire center employees at the Tifton, GA Walmart were awesome. They opened at 7am and had our tire replaced and we were on our way before 8am. They were sympathetic and kind.</li>
<li>When you pack a suitcase in a hurry, you end up with: 3 pair of underpants, 1 pair of shorts filled with holes, a pair of flower printed pants and a none matching print shirt. </li>
<li>Driving North, we saw an impressive amount of National Guard vehicles, Utility trucks, and Ambulances. </li>
<li>The Waze app is awesome for driving somewhere unfamiliar. It gets you around traffic jams.</li>
<li>The stress of watching a pending storm develop and tracking it for over a week is mind blowing. Is it going East or West? Who knows. </li>
</ul>
<br />
We watched the storms track for over a week. We prepared, just in case the storm came our way. We were ready to stay, until it became a Cat. 5 and looked like it was coming directly at us. We quickly threw some clothes in a suitcase, packed the car, grabbed the dog and cat, and evacuated. We were headed to stay with family in TN until the storm cleared. Normally an 11 hour drive, due to many circumstances, it took us 26 hours. First, traffic was ridiculous. Understandable since almost the entire state of Florida was trying to get the heck out of Dodge. After crossing into Georgia, we were exhausted and decided to stop to sleep a little. We ended up, at 1:30 in the morning, getting a flat tire. So, we put the spare on and parked at Walmart to wait for the tire center to open. Have you ever tried to sleep in a car with a dog and a cat? Tire changed by 7:30 the next morning and off we went.<br />
<br />
Plan for next hurricane:<br />
1. Plywood or storm shutters!!!!!!!<br />
2. Make a list of what needs to go into the suitcase in case we have to evacuate to prevent.<br />
3. Don't live in Florida.<br />
4. Snacks for the road. NO FOOD ANYWHERE!!!!!!<br />
<br />
Hope you all made it through unscathed!<br />
<br />

There is usually a good story to go along with the discovery. From Og Mandino to Amy Hill Hearth to Adriana Trigiani, these author discoveries have added so much happiness to my reading life. I discovered my newest favorite, Chitra Divakaruni, when I was assigned to run the book discussion at the Punta Gorda Library. While searching for the next club read, I spotted a book with a beautiful cover. That book was <i>Before We Visit The Goddess</i> by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. While researching the author for the club, I discovered that the author does Skype chats with book clubs. I took a chance and email in inquiry. Even though our current technology would now allow the Skype chat, the author was so wonderfully kind and answered our questions via text message. It was such a wonderful experience that I decided to read more of her work. This is how I came upon <i>One Amazing Thing</i>.<br />
<br />
The novel is about a group of 9 people stuck in an an Indian Consulate office after a massive earthquake hits. When they decide the building is not safe to try to get out, they bandage their wounds and wait in the darkness hoping for rescue. To pass the time, as the water level in the office begins to rise, they decide that they will each tell a story of one amazing thing that has shaped their lives.<br />
<br />
The stories they tell are as diverse as the group telling them, from uplifting to horrifying. You will have to read the book to find out more.<br />

Follow me on <a href="https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/1fc49eb20b457381" target="_blank">Twitter</a> for a chance to win a copy of this book. If you win, please pay it forward.<br />
<br />
The author of the book lives in Houston. She and her family are safe after Hurricane Harvey but many others are not. Please keep them all in your prayers and, if you can, please do what you can to help.<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading.<br />

Our adult programs are build around Pay It Forward, the book and movie. We are having a Pay It Forward Raffle for prizes where patrons have to fill out a card saying they performed 5 various Pay It Forward activities.<br />
<br />
Today, I was in the drive thru at Dunkin Donuts getting a coffee and the young lady in the car in front of me paid for my coffee. I'm still moved by her kindness.<br />

Back in May 2017 I was asked to take over the book discussion

While putting together information about the author, I found that she will do a video chat with book clubs. I sent an email asking about the video chat and Ms. Divakaruni responded that she would love to "meet" with us. The day of the chat, technical difficulties prevented us from video chatting but the author was kind enough to answer our questions via text message. She was lovely and our book group thoroughly enjoyed asking questions which helped us understand the book even better. I can't thank the author enough for making my first month of running the book club such a success! </div>

<br />
When Copper Black finds out that her boyfriend's ex-wife is expecting his child, she really needs a distraction. Enter a house sitting opportunity at a notorious party house. She moves from her temporary housing in an apartment over her pastor brother's garage into the party house where a murder had supposedly taken place (the body was never found). While house sitting, Copper must take care of the owner's tortoise, Oscar.<br />
<br />
While working on a story about a performing arts school, Copper Black discovers the body of a much loved, charitable woman. She must deal with a detective who seems to suspect her of the murder, the unraveling of her love life, the unwanted advances of a creepy guy, her estranged parents visiting, and help her brother with a scandal he is sort of involved in.<br />
<br />
This was a well written book that really pulled me in and kept me wanting more. I was surprised to hear that this was Megan Edwards debut. I am looking forward to her future writings.<br />
<br />
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading.<br />
<br />
The book is set to be released on March 14, 2017. Here is a <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Getting-Off-Frank-Sinatra-Mystery-ebook/dp/B01N98UK06/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1488758098&sr=1-1&keywords=getting+off+on+frank+sinatra" target="_blank">link to the book on Amazon</a>.<br />

<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Several friends have been telling me that I
need to read Dorothy Must Die. I knew it
was based on the Frank L. Baum Wizard of Oz books and I just couldn’t see
myself liking it. I did, however, add it
to my “to read” list. Last week, I
didn’t have anything that I really wanted to read, so….<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Oh MY!!!!
What a crazy read! If you are
wondering what happened in Oz after “The Wizard of Oz” ended, here is the
story. After Dorothy went back to
Kansas, she decided that she’d rather be in Oz. Somehow, she went back to Oz
and took over the throne from Ozma and let power, and magic, go to her
head. All of Dorothy’s friends from the
Wizard of Oz are still with her. The
Tinman is busy turning people into a tin army.
The Lion goes around sucking the fear out of Dorothy’s “enemies”. The Scarecrow has basically become a mad scientist
and is doing experiments on Dorothy’s subjects. Dorothy and Glinda the Good
Witch are going around stealing all of the magic in Oz, because the only thing
better than having magic is having ALL the magic.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Enter Amy Gumm, the grumpy teenager living in
Kansas with her pill popping, drunk mother. A tornado, of course, brings Amy to
Oz, where she is rescued by a boy named Pete. Amy is caught by Dorothy and is about to meet
a “fate worse than death”, when she is rescued by Mombi, a member of the
Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. The group, which includes Gert, Mombi,
Glamora – Ginda’s twin sister, and the warlock Nox, want to recruit Amy to
assassinate Dorothy. Amy, eventually agrees, and is bound to Mombi by her
promise to kill Dorothy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Amy, disguised as Astrid, learns Dorothy
and her minions’ routine and bides her time until she is able to attack. During Dorothy’s, “just because she wants a
party”, gala, Amy/Astrid has her chance when a smitten Tinman accidentally rips
Dorothy’s dress. Amy “poofs” Dorothy and
herself out of the party to change her dress.
When Amy gets her alone, she tries to kill Dorothy and all H-E- double-hockey-stick,
breaks loose. Amy gets away – barely,
and does manage to defeat ONE of Dorothy’s side-kicks. I don’t want to spoil the book by giving away
the ending. Needless to say, the ending
left me wanting more…and so, I downloaded the next book in the series, The
Wicked Will Rise.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN" style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN;">This series is considered Young Adult. It is a little graphic and violent, so you
won’t want to read it to the little ones.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">I first discovered Joyce and Jim Lavene’s books when I read <i>A Touch of Gold</i> from their Missing
Pieces mysteries. I hadn’t read any of
their other series until after their untimely deaths. When the Save Our Cozies Facebook group
posted the idea for an online “book tour” to celebrate their posthumously
published upcoming release, <i>Putting on the
Witch</i>, I knew I had to be involved. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">To prepare for the new book, I had to get my hands on the
first two books in the series, <i>Spell
Booked</i> and <i>Looking for Mr. Good Witch</i>.
So, off to the Kindle store I went to download the books.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">From the first sentence of <i>Spell Booked</i>, <b><i>Candle flame burning bright, With your flame
on this night, Trap the evil, seal it well, in this stone, make it remain.
Never to be free again</i></b>, I was hooked.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Olivia, Molly, and Elise realize that they are aging and
their powers are waning. They are working to recruit younger witches to
strengthen their coven so they may retire “to Boca”, when Olivia is murdered
and their spell book goes missing. It is
up to Molly and Elise to figure out the culprit and get their spell book back.
They need more than their waning magic powers to do so. I really enjoyed this look into the everyday
life of “normal” witches.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">In <i>Looking for Mr. Good
Witch</i>, Molly, Elise and Olivia’s ghost are up against a sea witch who is
going up and down the coast of the Carolina’s in search of the perfect mate,
leaving young male witches who don’t measure up, dead in her wake. With the
help of a selkie (a mythical creature that resembles a seal while in the water
and a human while on land) and a mermaid that loves crème puffs, they are
determined to keep their friend Brian out of the sea witch’s clutches. The more
I read this series the more I like the main characters. Molly and Elise are so
interesting and the fact that Olivia’s ghost is involved is wonderful.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

are determined to figure out who did it, all while trying to hide Oliva’s ghost

Mary Knowlton - wife, mother, teacher, librarian, book lover, volunteer, friend, and mentor - lost her life in a tragic accident. The circumstances surrounding her death are so bizarre that it is hard to wrap your head around it. News outlets have been hounding the community with insensitive questions such as, "What do you think about how she died?", "Where were you when it happened?", "Do you have any comments about the Police Department?" I know they are all looking for that "sound bite" that will get their story national attention, but these soul sucking vampires have put the sensational ahead of the humanity of the story. While the reporters wait for more about the circumstances leading up to Mary's death, they finally started reporting on who Mary was. I have learned so much about this wonderful woman that I didn't know about her.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I first met Mary Knowlton when I was transferred from the Port Charlotte Library to the Punta Gorda Library in February 2012. At the time, she was the President of the Friends of the Punta Gorda Library Board. She fought passionately for the Punta Gorda Library and the community and even after passing the baton to the current President, Katie Mazzi, remained fully involved in supporting the library, the library staff, and the patrons who use the library.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
During a particularly stressful time at the library, Mary took me aside, put her arm around me and offered her support to me. She told me to reach out if I ever needed something. Her kindness toward me will never be forgotten. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the things I admired most about Mary was how welcoming she was. I have experienced her greeting homeless patrons at the library in the same manner that she greeted national best-selling authors who visited. I keep expecting to hear her walk into the library and say, in her sing-song voice "Hi Kathy. How are you? What have you been reading lately?"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is my hope that the world will remember her kindness, passion for education and libraries, and all of the things she did for the community. My prayers are with her family and friends.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Friends of the Punta Gorda Library posted a wonderful memorial to Mary on their <a href="http://www.friendspg.org/" target="_blank">website</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks for reading.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This is how The Girl From the Sea by Shalini Boland begins. When the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) gets a missing person's report and, upon further investigation, determine it is a match. The woman is identified as Mia James by her boyfriend, Piers Bevan-Price. Mia still has no memories but Piers tries to spark her memory when he brings her home by acting like nothing happened. Mia is just not ready to return to "normal" because she can't remember what "normal" is.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">While Mia tries to rediscover her memories, she finds out that she loves rowing, she is extremely rich, and she is estranged from her mother and half sister. Mia begins having a dream where a menacing woman comes towards her. With Piers help, she figures out the the dream is set at the rowing club Mia belongs to. She visits the rowing club to see if it will spark her memory and meets Jack, one of the rowing instructors. She feels drawn to him as she feels like she and Piers are not meant to be together. As she and Jack get closer, more memories keep coming back until, finally, the truth behind what happened to Mia and the events leading up to this event are revealed.</span></div>

It is one that I am almost embarrassed to admit. <b>I LOVE POKEMON GO! </b>Yes, it is true. I have caught Pokemon Go fever. I blame my husband.<br />

One of the reasons that I have been enjoying it so much is the fact that the library where I work is a Pokestop. This means that every 5 minutes, I can visit the Pokestop and refresh my supply of Pokeballs, potions, and various other things needed to play the game. Here are some of the things I have caught since I started playing. Please note, these were caught during break time or while preparing a Facebook post on the library Facebook page.<br />

Really, I did. When I found out that I was being given the chance to attend the American Library Association annual conference 2016 (#alaac16) in Orlando for one day, I was so excited. I poured through the programs and speakers that would be there on my day. I chose three programs I wanted to attend. I went through the exhibitor list and wrote down my top 5 must see booths. I was PREPARED!!<br />

Upon arrival at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, I was amazed at the size of the place. <br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
This is the South building. It is the most distinctive building and catches your eye as soon as you see it.</div>

The West Building, where the event was held, is a whopping 1,103,538 square feet! This photo doesn't give the West building credit.<br />

I wish I had thought to take a photo of the exhibit hall. When I walked into the exhibit hall, I felt like a country bumpkin seeing the big city for the first time. Everywhere there was something to look at. <br />
<br />
I managed to make it to two of the three programs I had chosen.I really wish I hadn't missed the Raspberry Pi programming one. It was my #1 choice but it was not in the main conference area. I would have had to take a shuttle and would have missed my ride back home.<br />
<br />
The Active Shooter program was very good. It is sad that we have to be prepared for something like this but I feel better knowing that I have some preparation now.<br />
<br />
We headed into the Exhibit Hall next. Imagine walking into a room that is FILLED with aisle upon aisle of your favorite thing in the whole world. This was me.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It took me about an hour to get through the first aisle of booksellers, authors, and publishers. It was BEAUTIFUL!!! I started at the last row because I wanted to find the booth where my friend Patty's book was displayed. I was so happy when I finally found it!!<br />
<br />

<br />
After grabbing some lunch and seeing some more exhibits, we headed to our next program, which was about Maker Spaces and other programs in the library. Ninety minutes later, full of knowledge and ideas, we headed out to see what we would do next. We decided to head towards the van and head home since two of the three who were traveling together were not feeling well.<br />

I would say that my first ALA conference was a great experience. I am looking forward to putting what I learned into practice.<br />
<br />
P.S. To celebrate my return from the ALA conference, I am giving away one ebook written by one of the authors I met at the conference. Enter <a href="https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/0bbf92135f0d0c9e" target="_blank">here.</a><br />

Thanks for reading!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220383393717427564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6232118246521221664.post-68830939215248414432016-06-19T22:00:00.000-04:002016-06-19T22:00:52.139-04:00Cavendon Trilogy by Barbara Taylor BradfordI received an advanced copy of The Cavendon Luck from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Shortly before The Cavendon Luck by Barbara Taylor Bradford was released on June 7, 2016, I began reading the first book in the trilogy, Cavendon Hall. This is my first time reading this author's works. St. Martin's Press graciously offered me free access to all three books in the series and asked that I share my thoughts on the books.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are a fan of Downton Abbey and historical fiction, you will probably enjoy Barbara Taylor Bradford's three book series telling the stories of the Ingham and Swann families. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cavendon-Hall-Barbara-Taylor-Bradford/dp/1250032350/ref=pd_bxgy_14_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3G6ZMVAYMA79Z0S1WNNF" target="_blank">Cavendon Hall</a> (3 stars for me) which is home to Charles Ingham, the sixth Earl of Mowbray, and his wife, Felicity, their son Miles and four daughters, Deirdre, Daphne, DeLacy, and Dulcie. Walter Swann is the Earl's valet and his wife, Alice, is a seamstress who makes the beautiful clothes for the ladies in the family. The Ingham family and the Swann family have lived side by side for centuries. When Daphne is attacked on Cavendon land, the Swann family comes to her aid. Will what happened to her ruin Daphne's chances for happiness? Not if the Swann's can help it. As WWI begins to affect the world, the Ingham and Swann families must depend on each other during the hard times. I enjoyed getting to know both families. I saw a lot of similarities to Downton Abbey in this book. It did not detract from the Ingham/Swann family story though. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cavendon-Women-Barbara-Taylor-Bradford/dp/1250032385?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1250032385&linkCode=as2&redirect=true&ref_=as_li_tf_tl&tag=netg01-20" target="_blank">Cavendon Women</a> (3.5 stars for me) book 2 of the series, continues the story of the Ingham and Swann families. It is now 1929 and the financial turmoil of the times had begun to affect the aristocracy. Great houses are selling off their valuables and allowing tourists to pay to view their living quarters to make ends meet. As the investments made by the men in the family fall apart, it is the women of the Ingham and Swann families that come to the rescue. This was a fast and enjoyable read. I liked the fact that the women were not written as damsels in distress as is the case in most "romance" novels. These are strong, smart women.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cavendon-Luck-Novel-Chronicles/dp/1250091276?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1250091276&linkCode=as2&redirect=true&ref_=as_li_tf_tl&tag=netg01-20" target="_blank">The Cavendon Luck</a> (4 stars for me) is the newest release in the series. It's 1938 and eldest daughter, Deirdre, is back working for the War Department. As Hitler and the Germans begin their assault on Europe, the Ingham and Swann families begin to prepare for the worst, an invasion of England by the Germans. From victory gardens, war casualties, to air raid sirens, the reality of WWII England is here in full color. This was probably my favorite book of the three. Intrigue, family secrets, and a little bit of romance made it hard to put this book down. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While not as compelling as Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale or Ken Follett's Century Trilogy, the Cavendon Chronicles will satisfy your Downton Abbey withdrawal.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks for reading.</div>

This is why I aim to read at least ONE of the <a href="http://www.floridamediaed.org/ssyra.html" target="_blank">Sunshine State Young Readers Award</a> books each year. Beginning the end of April, I start checking to see if the list has been published. Once it is, I make a checklist/bookmark for the patrons of the Charlotte County Library System. <br />
<br />
The 2013 - 2014 Sunshine State Readers Award list for grades 6 -8 included Wonder by R.J. Palacio, which was about a ten-year-old boy who was born with facial deformities. It remains in my list of top ten most moving books that I have ever read. I can still get choked up thinking about the story. It was THAT good.<br />
<br />
I haven't had a chance to read anything on the 2014-2015 list yet, but I have my eye on Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. Here is a video about the book from www.booktrailersforreaders.com<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QHsUpw5HuGc/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QHsUpw5HuGc?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
This year (2016-2017), one book on the list jumped out at me. It was a big book and was listed on the grade 6-8. When I read the description, I knew I had to read this book. Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. Here is the book trailer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/AE72gZI5rPY/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AE72gZI5rPY?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
The story begins when a boy named Otto becomes lost in the woods and is helped by three prophetic sisters who gift him with a quest and a harmonica. What follows is the story of the lives of three people who's lives become interwoven through ownership of the harmonica - Friedrich, Mike, and Ivy. The book deals with the treatment of Jews in Germany during WWII, the treatment of orphans in the US during the Great Depression, and the treatment of Japanese-Americans after Pearl Harbor. The author wove all of the stories of these people together in such a beautiful way and then the ending connected them all through music.<br />
<br />
If you can, I suggest getting your hands on the audiobook. The story was enhanced by the wonderful music that was interspersed through the audiobook. I listened to the book while driving to and from work. I am so glad that I did.<br />
<br />
